The Least

I make myself small.
Depart. Return.
I weave between echoes,
all of me listening.
Wind stutters in the birch trees.
Fleeting clouds 
in a blue-skin sky.
Decipher. I try,
as evening unmoors.
Rummage and renounce.
The least of
the clutter.

Mercedes Lawry is the author of three chapbooks, the latest, In the Early Garden with Reason,was selected by Molly Peacock for the 2018 WaterSedge Chapbook Contest.
